Steamed Parsnips with Sweet Butter Sauce

For those who find parsnip tricky to prepare, here’s a simple way to enjoy this root vegetable and draw out its natural sweetness. This recipe comes from Farmer John’s Cookbook.

Steamed Parsnips with Sweet Butter Sauce


  • 3 large parsnips sliced lengthwise into 1/2 inch thick strips
  • ¼ c. butter
  • 1 T. maple syrup or honey
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Dash cinnamon (optional)


  1. Steam parsnips for approximately 10 to 15 minute depending on size. When finished transfer to a serving dish.
  2. Melt butter in a small pot over medium heat. remove the pot from heat and stir in the maple syrup or honey. I added a dash of cinnamon as well.
  3. Pour the butter sauce over the parsnips. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
