Grannie Sherwood’s Chili Sauce

This recipe, shared by CSA member Wendy, was passed down to her from her grandmother.

Grannie Sherwood's Chili Sauce


  • 6 qt basket tomatoes
  • 6 medium onions chopped
  • 4 cups brown sugar
  • 3 cups white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 2 tsp celery seed
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3 red peppers chopped
  • 3 green peppers chopped


  1. Peel tomatoes out of hot water (cut x's into the bottom of each tomato, put in boiling water until the skin starts to shed, then remove from water, allow to cool, and slip skins off.)
  2. Combine tomatoes and onion.
  3. Add remaining ingredients. Boil gently in large kettle until liquid is reduced and mixture is slightly thick.
  4. Enjoy immediately, freeze, or bottle in sterilized jars and boil in water bath.
